Guardian Adventures provides informal educational opportunities for children, teens, and adults.  By incorporating STEM principles into story-based educational adventures, we are able to provide self-directed motivation, cooperation built on multiple methods of communication, and problem solving that incorporates analytical thinking as well as opening the path to innovation.

How many of you work with children or teens or hope to work with children and teens?

At Guardian Adventures, we call our teachers “Hero Makers”.  This is because all heroes were at some point inspired by a teacher.

So as you start your challenging journey, it will be filled with frustration, obstacles, failure, perseverance, triumph, tears, shouts of joy, and most importantly – your own learning.  You will get better at teaching and this means you will get better at changing the world. This journey is a very important one because if this world needs one thing, it’s mentors of heroes.

When you step into this journey, you will belong to a community of people who feel the need to do what they can to make sure that the future generation is a little more learned… a little more wise… a little more open hearted… and hungry for change.

Here’s the thing though: You are working to inspire change you may never live to see.  But you will live knowing that you have planted the seeds that will flower into a passion for learning – and that this learning will range from making one person’s life a little bit better… to saving the lives of countless people. Because as a mentor, you may not discover the cure for a terrible disease or a massive atrocity.  No, you will just be the inspiration for those people who go on to do this.

Every student who becomes a great inventor, an inspirational leader, a powerful healer, a courageous explorer… they were all inspired by a teacher.

This is your “job”.  You are changing the world one student at a time.  One lesson at a time.  That’s important – please don’t forget this.  Don’t focus on how many kids you reach or how much growth they experience – this is too big of a goal.  Focus on just this next lesson.  And in that lesson, focus on 20%… not 100%.  Because 20% is 1/5th of the way there.  And none of us get to 100% without first going through the 20%.

So keep going.  Don’t give up no matter how frustrated you are.  Because my kids and their kids and all the kids to come depend on you.  You will inspire the Heroes who will find the answers and create the solutions.  They are the Heroes.  You are Hero Makers.

“[Science] is more than a school subject, or the periodic table, or the properties of waves. It is an approach to the world, a critical way to understand and explore and engage with the world, and then have the capacity to change that world…”

— President Barack Obama, March 23, 2015
